Documentary – The Power of Knowing – Experiences of Youth and Caregivers with Paediatric HIV Disclosure
Worldwide, there are about 3.3 million children under 15 years of age living with HIV. Despite the many benefits of knowing their status, the vast majority of these children, even amongst those on treatment, have not been told that they are HIV positive. The Power of Knowing documentary reveals the stories of young South Africans who have found out their status and recounts their experience – and those of their primary caregivers. Jive Media Africa conceptualised, scripted and produced this film through participatory methods including widespread consultations with clinical experts, social work experts and the participants themselves. Barcode media provided production services for this documentary. The film has already received acclaim as a pioneering health communication tool on the topic of paediatric HIV Disclosure.
